Why SF Wildflower Scout?
Wildflower SF Scout is a new local scouting alternative for 4th to 5th grade girls meeting monthly with parent participation. It’s a good fit for active families desiring to forge relationships and share skills outdoors. Aware of climate change, we encourage ride sharing, plastic reduction behaviors, in an encouraging way. With dynamic participation, Wildflower SF Scout will evolve to meet the girls’ needs over the next decade, building strong partnerships with community organizations and business women.
The wildflower scout model is simple. Annually scouts participate in the following:
- Hikes/ Scouting– 7 monthly hikes, screen free, one to a lighthouse. Nothing like fresh air, climbing and community to renew for the week. Build a fire, use a map, and navigate with a compass… Scouts plan potluck meal with in season produce. At least one camping trip.
- Voice / Civic Engagement- 2 civic engagement get togethers. SF Wildflower supports candidates that act on climate change, support the environment, women’s rights and human rights. We care about our neighbors. For the next 3 years we will be supporting the August outdoor Kidz Fest, whether through leading crafts tables, selling snacks, or doing skits to drive home proper bin sorting for the event diversion discount.
- Entrepreneurship / Homesteading – 2 maker events with mentors. Make and sell, know what’s in what you are selling, sell what’s local, and build financial literacy. Proceeds go to camping trip, supplies and a donation to a local environmental or humanitarian nonprofit. Meet local women business owners, build your network.
Hallie founded this group, Rachael, Vicki and Allyson are on the coordinating committee, which rotates. All parents can sign up to host a hike or support in another way in a way they like. As it is not drop-off, if a guardian can’t be present we request the guardian line up another scout parent who can look after their child. This is a citywide scout group and so sometimes hikes/events may not be on your side of town. We do one crosstown hike section a year.
Inspiration / Reference
Greta Thunberg who clearly told it like it is: “Our civilization is being sacrificed to the opportunity for a very small number of people to continue making enormous amounts of money.” It doesn’t get any clearer than that. It’s so obvious even a child can see it! “You are not mature enough to tell it like it is. Even that burden you leave to your children.” Ouch.
